Natálie Hatinová

Natálie Hatinová is a proud Romani woman who is 19 years old and comes from a small town called Cerhovice, near Beroun. She has been musically inclined since she was a child, singing (she was a member of the Roma choir Čhavorenge under the direction of Ida Kelarová), playing the piano for almost ten years and the guitar for four years. This year she graduated from the Secondary Pedagogical School in Beroun, but she is not planning to go to university at the moment. She works at the Cerhovice primary school as a teaching assistant and a teacher in the after-school club.

When she was growing up, she remembers thinking of girls more in terms of what it might "be like" with them, but she didn't think about long-term relationships. At seventeen, she ended her two-year relationship with a man and started a new job where she met a colleague with whom she immediately hit it off. At first it was like a normal friendship, but over time they began to feel much more for each other. She has now been with her girlfriend for almost two years.

Natalie's mom noticed that her daughter was spending most of her time with her new friend Aneta, who she knew from a work colleague was a lesbian. So she started asking Natalie if they were anything more than friends, or if they were trying something on her. Natalie denied it at first, but she was beginning to suspect that there was something between them.

After a while, Natalie came to her mother and told her that she didn't want to fight the feelings she had for Aneta anymore. Mom reacted by crying, which lasted for almost a week. She was not unhappy or ashamed that her daughter was a lesbian, but that she would face double discrimination. She feared for her daughter that she would have it even harder because being Roma and lesbian is not easy.

Her father did not want to admit it at first and saw Aneta only as a friend. Over time, he accepted it and took it as a done deal. As for the extended family, Natalia introduced her girlfriend on her 18th birthday. She presented them with a fait accompli because at that point they had been together for a while and she just wanted her family to know who she was with. She didn't explain to them how Natalie had it, if she'd felt that way since she was a little girl, or how she felt about it. Natalie was lucky and the reunion went without any negative feedback and whenever there is another family reunion, they take Aneta in stride and love her.

One of the benefits of growing up in today's generation is that it is more open-minded in terms of diversity. Therefore, when Natalie confided in her friends, she received positive reactions and support. Natalie would like to say, "I realize that not everyone is so lucky in their family or among their friends in terms of coming out or background. Of course I wish them well, but times are changing and so are opinions, so if we talk about diversity it will make it a little easier for other people again."
